DAE project: “Unmaking. (Re)making” - 2021
Description
This project took place during Covid and it was decided to design something to stimulate human contact after months of the 1,5 meter rule. A collection of rings was created, made out of the acrylic protection sheets that you saw everywhere. The sheets were cut into ring-like shapes, and instead of gemstones, the rings were set with magnets. Once two people would shake hands while wearing the rings, the magnets would stick, emphasizing the human touch. The main idea behind this project was to create awareness of closeness and distance, while creating an interplay using the material.
What have I learned?
This project has taught me that storytelling and presentation of your design is very important, believing in your designs and the story that it tells can add to the experience of the listener or user. On top of this, this project made me realise that not everyone likes your design. For me this was quite confronting at the time, but this also taught me to come up for my own work, giving me more confidence in my skills and my decision making. After this project, my mindset changed from fitting in my projects to creating passion projects. For me, a passion project flows easier as it comes from intrinsic motivation, resulting in an overall better result and a more coherent story.
